The Long Island Council for the Social Studies

Each year the LICSS acknowledges outstanding social studies educators and supervisors throughout Long Island with the LICSS Professional Award for Professional Excellence.

 Below are the requirements for nomination.

Social Studies Professional Awards Requirements


The Margaret Simon Award for Excellence in Elementary Social Studies Education

•    Is a member of the Long Island Council for the Social Studies at the of nomination
•    Integrates social studies into many facets of the elementary program
•    Advocates social studies on the elementary level
•    Emphasizes the uniqueness of each student and provides for individual difference among students
•    Develops, uses and shares with others, a variety of materials and teaching techniques for improving social studies education




Outstanding Middle/Junior High School Social Studies Teacher
Outstanding High School Social Studies Teaching Award


•    Is a member of the Long Island Council for the Social Studies at time of nomination
•    Is certified as a social studies teacher
•    Has taught in the category for at least 5 years
•    Has demonstrated knowledge of social studies content and current social studies issues
•    Has demonstrated effective and inspiring social studies teaching, including the ability to convey the importance and vitality of social studies to the students at the level for which the person is nominated




Outstanding Middle/Junior/High School Untenured Teacher
Three Years or Less


•    Is a member of the Long Island Council for the Social Studies at the of nomination
•    Is certified as a social studies teacher
•    Has taught in the category for three years or less
•    Has demonstrated knowledge of social studies content and current social studies issues
•    Has demonstrated effective and inspiring social studies teaching, including the ability to convey the importance and vitality of social studies to the students at the level for which the person is nominated

 



The Harry C Charles Outstanding Social Studies Supervisor/Chairperson Award


•    Is a member of the Long Island Council for the Social Studies at the time of nomination
•    Is a certified in social studies as well as in the area of supervision

•    Has been a chairperson/supervisor for at least five years
•    Has demonstrated knowledge in social studies content as well as knowledge of current social studies issues
•    Has demonstrated inspiring social studies leadership, including incorporation of effective techniques in supervisory practices
